Run! Run! Run! Hometown Festival’s 5K Walk is on September 5

The 7th Annual Hometown Festival 5K is happening on September 5, 2016. This is a featured event at the 18th Annual Boulder Creek Hometown Festival. The 5K walk will target families and individuals who are inspired be physically active while enjoying time together in beautiful downtown Boulder.

The 5K walk will begin at 9am on Monday, Sept. 5th, 2016 on the Boulder Municipal lawn and will be an out-and-back course on the Boulder Creek Path. Participants will gather and end at the Boulder Creek Hometown Fest Sports & Kids’ Expo, an event area on the Municipal Building lawn consisting of various organizations, services and equipment geared toward Boulder’s active, fitness-oriented community. There is a family and kid event.

  • 5k Race at 9:00am  $25.00

  • Kids Races 9:45am  $10

Just as the Boulder Creek Festival kicks off the summer in Boulder County, the Boulder Creek Hometown Festival is the perfect bookend to close out the summer event season. This event features arts & crafts exhibitors in Central Park, live performances at the Bandshell, the Hometown Fest 5K, an interactive kids & sports expo, a food court & beer garden, and much more! Don’t miss out on the festivities of this community event each Labor Day weekend, September 3-5, 2016.

The Pearl Street Stampedes Are Back!

The Pearl Street Stampedes start at 7 p.m. in front of the Boulder County Court House on the 1300 block of Pearl Street. The Stampedes’ finales take place in the parking lot at 10th & Pearl streets. These events are FREE and fun for the whole family. This is a great opportunity to cheer on your favorite Buffaloes and listen to the traditional sounds of the Golden Buffalo Marching Band!

Boulder Bike Trails

In and around Boulder, over 50 miles of trails on Open Space and Mountain Parks are designated for use by bicyclists. Please remember that bikes may only be ridden on trails that are posted with the international bicycle symbol. Do not ride on trails that are posted as “no bikes” or that do not have a sign indicating bikes are allowed; bikes are not allowed to ride off-trail.

We all enjoy OSMP in different ways. Expect to encounter other visitors on trails. Be courteous and share the trail so that everyone can have an enjoyable experience. Watch this Trail Etiquette Video from Boulder Mountainbike Alliance and follow the tips below.

Hike. Learn. Get Outside With Your Family With Boulder’s Natural Selections

Get to know Boulder. Get to know Boulder better. I bet you will learn something new if you participate in the Natural Selections hikes/events. Natural Selections is the City of Boulder’s ongoing series of educational nature programs on topics including ecology, wildlife, local history, night hikes, children’s programs, plus many more. These programs happen year around and are free and open to the public.

Family Wildlife Program
Sat. Aug. 27, 9 – 10:30 am
Join Education and Outreach coordinator Jean Koszalka for a morning hike at the top of Flagstaff Mountain to look at some of the incredible animals that call Open Space and Mountain Parks home.  We will explore their habitat, and play a few games to help us understand how they use their senses. We will meet at the Flagstaff Nature Center. Please leave your pups at home.

Nature For Kids & Parents:  A Black Bear’s Summer with Her Cubs
Sun. Aug. 28, 1  –  3 pm
Summer is a season of play for bear cubs!  Join Debora Martin, Early Childhood Educator/Volunteer Naturalist for an easy hike, while learning the importance of play for survival! Learn about the yummy summer foods they eat, how mom protects them, what happens to the yearling bears that were cut off from mom, and now are finding out what the world is like.  Meet at the Lehigh Street entrance to Shanahan Ridge (map search 1903 Lehigh Street in Boulder, where Lehigh and Lafayette Streets intersect) for cool facts, & fun!  Ages 5+

Five Senses Nature Hike: Story Time & Kids’ Hike
Tue. Aug. 30, 10  –  11 am
Join naturalist Ellen Orleans for story time along the Bobolink Trail. Celebrate Boulder’s Open Spaces with colorful picture books and participatory foot stomping, arm flapping, and animal noise-making. At 10:30, we’ll leave for a Five Senses nature hike along the shady creek. This activity is geared toward 2- to 5-year-olds, but open to all.
