Natural Selections is the City of Boulder’s ongoing series of educational nature programs on topics including ecology, wildlife, local history, night hikes, children’s programs, plus many more. These programs happen year around and are free and open to the public.

Family Wildlife Program
Sat. Aug. 27, 9 – 10:30 am
Join Education and Outreach coordinator Jean Koszalka for a morning hike at the top of Flagstaff Mountain to look at some of the incredible animals that call Open Space and Mountain Parks home. We will explore their habitat, and play a few games to help us understand how they use their senses. We will meet at the Flagstaff Nature Center. Please leave your pups at home.

Nature For Kids & Parents: A Black Bear’s Summer with Her Cubs
Sun. Aug. 28, 1 – 3 pm
Summer is a season of play for bear cubs! Join Debora Martin, Early Childhood Educator/Volunteer Naturalist for an easy hike, while learning the importance of play for survival! Learn about the yummy summer foods they eat, how mom protects them, what happens to the yearling bears that were cut off from mom, and now are finding out what the world is like. Meet at the Lehigh Street entrance to Shanahan Ridge (map search 1903 Lehigh Street in Boulder, where Lehigh and Lafayette Streets intersect) for cool facts, & fun! Ages 5+

Five Senses Nature Hike: Story Time & Kids’ Hike
Tue. Aug. 30, 10 – 11 am
Join naturalist Ellen Orleans for story time along the Bobolink Trail. Celebrate Boulder’s Open Spaces with colorful picture books and participatory foot stomping, arm flapping, and animal noise-making. At 10:30, we’ll leave for a Five Senses nature hike along the shady creek. This activity is geared toward 2- to 5-year-olds, but open to all. “All Aboard!” Calling all kiddos, enjoy a free ride on Pearl Street Mall’s one-and-only Tebo Train! Children ages 10 and under (and accompanying adults) will chug along the beautiful Pearl Street Mall on the only set of wheels permitted “on the bricks”! The Tebo Train runs Mondays – Thursdays from May 28 – August 29, 2016. Board the train between 10 – 11:15 am in front of Wells Frago Bank at the corner of 12th and Pearl Street. The University of Colorado Museum of Natural History is an academic unit of the Graduate School at the University of Colorado at Boulder with a mission to contribute to knowledge of the natural world and the humanities through research, teaching, and public education. The Museum’s collectionsnumber more than four million objects in anthropology/archaeology, botany, entomology, paleontology, vertebrates and invertebrates.

The University of Colorado Museum offers a wide variety of K-12 and adult educational programs and activities throughout the year, including lectures, family days, and guided tours. The exhibition galleries are open to the public seven days a week, free of charge. The Museum and Field Studies Graduate Program offers students an opportunity to earn a Master of Science degree or a certificate in Museum Studies.

Zoo Lights Are On at the Denver Zoo

The last of the free nature play programs is happening August 31 and September 3, 2015. It’s not too late to get in on the fun! The City of Boulder is offering free nature play programs designed to connect children 3 to 12 to nature, outdoor play and learning. The City of Boulder provides the fun, you provide the supervision. Nature explorers need to be prepared for any type of weather. Simply drop-in, sign-up and have fun.

All programs are on Mondays and Thursdays.

Ages 3 to 7: 9 to 11 a.m.
Ages 8 to 12: 1 to 3 p.m.
